He wants us to give up something that will result in a better world.
First of all, Lent is not what Ramadan is about, whereas Ramadan is about doing the desires of the father of lies pardoning the sinners and inviting them to sin, just as is shown in:
"Whoever does not give up false statements (i.e. telling lies), and evil deeds, and speaking bad words to others, Allah is not in need of his (fasting) leaving his food and drink"
and mocking all others staying chaste during the daylight (to publicly hide the sinners pardoned from fasting) only to end up being fast (immoral) during the darkness.
For this is what delights the devil, sinning in concealment:
"all of my unnah will be forgiven except those who publicize their sins"
