Jihad
What is it? What does it mean? And how should we understand it?
I planned to pen a detailed expose on Jihad and its meaning, and perhaps I still will in the future. However, my friend Daisy Khan invited me to her podcast to discuss this very subject. So rather than reinvent the wheel, I figured what better way to convey to my readers the meaning of Jihad than to provide a full and robust conversation—one replete with detailed questions and thorough referenced answers.

My goodness, what a refreshing interview and conversation between two engaging minds. I appreciate being able to discover another passionate, principled, and intelligent voice so devoted to uplifting humanity by exposing the truths that our society tries hard to bury with propaganda. Both the story of the Prophet’s aid to the woman who had been taught to fear him and your story of raising funds for the health of your opponent’s ailing spouse echo in my mind the beauty of these spiritual teachings. They certainly serve to dissolve misconceptions that we as Americans have been spoon-fed. Islam has been so sadly demonized in this society and yet as you noted (and I’ve seen confirmed elsewhere) the vast majority of our terrorists are white males identifying as Christian. As an educator, I always appreciate the opportunity to learn, question any assumptions, and deepen my understanding. Thanks for the good that you bring to our world by speaking from the heart for justice and peace.
Thank you for making this recording available. I hope you will expand upon the difference between and meanings of the Great Jihad and the Little Jihad in your written column. I think that the misunderstanding of “jihad” is a huge source if anti-Muslim prejudice in the United States, if not all of the West.
