What 'punishment' does Islam propose for those who decide to leave Islam?

Some critics claim that Islam commands “death for apostasy” for anyone who dares leave the Islamic faith. This claim is both false, and tries to hide the broader point. That is, far from punishing people for their religious beliefs, no faith is so adamant on the protection of religious freedom and freedom of conscience as is Islam. As you read this, I ask you to reflect what other religion has gone to such great lengths to protect freedom of conscience? But don’t simply take my word for it, let me bring the receipts to make my case.

Critics Sound Off

A prominent critic of Islam writes:

By renouncing her Islamic faith, she had committed apostasy, the ultimate crime in Islam, for which the Koran prescribes the death penalty; once you are Islamic, you are never allowed to leave.

This statement makes four unsubstantiated allegations in a single sentence. Let’s unpack them one by one.

1. Is Apostasy the “Ultimate Crime” in Islam?

The idea that apostasy is a punishable crime—let alone the “ultimate” crime—is flatly incorrect. Yes, Islam encourages Muslims to remain faithful, but what religion does not? Many interpretations of Christianity teach eternal damnation for apostates. Some Jewish traditions consider themselves the chosen people to the exclusion of all others. Hindu caste structures historically forbid changing caste altogether.

In contrast, Islam identifies the “ultimate crime” against humanity as murder or treason, not apostasy. Indeed, murder and treason are the only two offenses for which the Qur’an even allows capital punishment—and even then, only under strict conditions with due process.

“Whosoever killed a person—unless it be for killing a person or for creating disorder in the land—it shall be as if he had killed all mankind...”
(Qur’an 5:33)

In fact the above teaching also found in the Talmud. Some scholars have discussed capital punishment for egregious acts like rape—but again, the Qur’an offers no support for capital punishment in the case of apostasy.

2. Does the Qur’an Prescribe Death for Apostates?

In one word, no. The critics making these sweeping claims are unable to cite a single verse to support the allegation—because such a verse does not exist. In fact, and to the contrary, the Qur’an is the first religious scripture in history to categorically prohibit religious compulsion:

“There shall be no compulsion in religion.”
(Qur’an 2:257)

The Qur’an addresses disbelief over 150 times, and never once does it grant human beings the authority to punish someone for disbelief. Instead, it repeatedly emphasizes that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was a warner, not a compeller or enforcer:

“We have not sent thee as a keeper over them.”
(Qur’an 6:70–71, 10:109, 88:22–23, among others)

Moreover, the Qur’an even mentions individuals who believe, disbelieve, and then believe again—and still offers no worldly punishment for them:

See Qur’an 2:218; 3:21, 73, 91; 4:138; 5:55, 62, 93, 100; 9:3, 66–68, 74; 16:107; 47:26–27; 63:2–7

If the punishment for disbelief was death, then how could someone be allowed to believe and disbelieve and believe again? So, notwithstanding that the Qur’an rejects any punishment for apostasy, even the claim that it does is logically absurd.

3. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Never Punished Apostates

The life of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the clearest proof against this false allegation.

In one notable incident, a Bedouin who had newly accepted Islam fell ill in Medina. He asked to be released from his pledge of allegiance three times and was denied each time. Eventually, he left the city—and no one stopped or harmed him. (Sahih Bukhari, vol. 1, Book 3, #28)

This story alone shatters the critics’ argument. Not only is there no command to punish apostates in the Qur’an, but there is not a single verified incident in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ ever punished someone for leaving Islam.

And I challenge any critic to produce such an example.

4. Islam Guarantees Freedom of Belief For All People

Apostasy in Islam is not a capital offense. It is not even a worldly crime. The Qur’an guarantees freedom of conscience, and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never punished a single person for leaving the faith.

“Whosoever wills, let him believe; and whosoever wills, let him disbelieve.”
(Qur’an 18:30)

This is also why the Qur’an goes out of its way to command Muslims to protect Churches, Synagogues, and Temples from attack, all as a priority even before protecting Mosques from attack. If Islam’s true goal was some sort of violent military domination, as critics ignorantly allege, it would command Muslims to partake in such attacks, not to risk our own lives and safety to prevent such attacks from happening in the first place.

This is the truth—backed by scripture, history, and prophetic example.

Conclusion

Islam and Prophet Muhammad (sa) are so unequivocal in protecting religious freedom, that far from ‘commanding’ any sort of punishment for those who leave Islam, the only commandment Islam makes is to Muslims, forbidding us from placing any burden, harm, or restriction on any person for matters of faith. This is because Islam does not fear scrutiny—what it rejects is slander. Critics who perpetuate falsehoods like “death for apostasy” only deepen ignorance and sow division. But as long as these myths persist, we will continue debunking them with clarity, facts, and yes, compassion.

As a final note, it bears stating that those Muslim majority nations that enact anti-blasphemy or death for apostasy laws do a disservice to Islam, and more importantly, a disservice to all humanity. They demonstrate their own ignorance and fear of truth. Such laws are offensive to human dignity and human nature, and should be repealed immediately. They have no place in a civilized society, and certainly no refuge in Islamic teachings. As the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as), once wrote:

The religion that can easily establish its truth and superiority by sound intellectual arguments, heavenly signs or other reliable testimony, does not need the sword to threaten men and force a confession of its truth from them. Religion is worth the name only so long as it is in consonance with reason. If it fails to satisfy that requisite, if it has to make up for its weakness in argument by handling the sword, it needs no other argument for its falsification. The sword it wields cuts its own throat before reaching others.
